Mastering Fluency

In order to promote fluency, independence, confidence and a love of maths, we develop and celebrate secure declarative and procedural (facts and methods) knowledge through our Maths Award Scheme and the use of NumBots and Times Tables Rock Stars.

A key driver in this scheme is the desire to ensure that pupils understand the many connections between mathematical facts, procedures and concepts and that they that build on prior knowledge in a structured and effective manner. This also allows us to teach pupils to compare different strategies and to be aware of common misconceptions and barriers, addressing them before they arise.

This scheme links to our bespoke maths curriculum, ensuring that progress is made in small steps with pupils aware of the end points of each award through regular, low-stakes testing and teacher support. Through this, we see the development of not only confident, accurate and effective mathematicians, but also motivated children who love maths and can apply their learning in a variety of contexts.

What do our pupils think?

"Once you get onto Human Calculator and Maths Genius, it’s dead hard." Year 4 Pupil
"Whichever stage you are on, there is always something to challenge and help you." Year 6 Pupil

NumBots

In EYFS and KS1, children use NumBots to build and secure key early maths knowledge, moving from iconic and image representations and visualisations, to concrete manipulatives, and on to abstract numbers. Numbots covers practical strategies for approaching different types of calculations - such as bridging to the nearest 10, near doubles, partitioning numbers and compensating.

Each week, one child in Year 1 and Year 2 is given a NumBots certificate to celebrate participation or achievement for the week.

The NumBots scheme runs alongside our Nursery and Reception curriculum, which makes the confident grasp and love of numbers paramount to our school maths vision and our pupils' learning journey.

All children in EYFS (from the Summer Term) and KS1 have a NumBots login. Please speak to your child's class teacher if you are unsure what this is.

Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) and Our Maths Award Scheme

When children enter KS2, children move to Times Tables Rock Stars and begin our Maths Award Scheme. The scheme focuses on developing automaticity in pupils through the accurate and rapid recall of all key multiplication tables facts and related strategies. These build up in difficulty throughout the scheme and cover many of the key objectives for the KS2 arithmetic paper, whilst also introducing some key skills from KS3 to support with transition to high school.

Children progress at their own pace throughout KS2 and we encourage parental support at home. Teachers and teaching assistants throughout KS2 work together to ensure that children are supported and challenged with their learning and that children's fluency and knowledge progresses over time.

The best thing that children can do for these awards is to practise their times tables regularly - in the car, on the walk to school, just before bed, etc. Make it fun and a game and allow children to go on Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) for ten / fifteen minutes as often as they can.
