Art and Design Celebration of Work

Year 2 Joan Miro inspired art work, they have used a number of his paintings and prints to create their own layered, shape abstract art. They children created their own Miro style creatures too and enjoyed the freedom to use shapes imaginatively. Some of the children selected words for the display from their sketchbook annotation sheets and wrote these on coloured papers.

Year 6 have been comparing the work of two artists that brought the war home, using their sketches, drawings and paintings. They have been using a grid method to scale up sketches by John Singer Sargent. So far this term they have used biros, graphite sticks, charcoal and different grades of pencils to explore mark making. They thought about how the materials used conveyed emotion and applied this in their own work. Different lines and pressures have been used to explore form and texture seen in the work of Henry Moore.

Year 5 have been learning about photography and the work of local photographer Harry Horton. The children planned and created some incredible shots this half term. They worked very hard to create imaginative, original and thoughtful photos, thinking of themes, staging, lighting, focus, camera angle, forced perspective, framing and backgrounds. We hope you like them!

The Nursery class have been making printed tracks, drawn maps and used collage to create the Hungry Caterpillar mobiles and mixed material portraits. They have created repeat pattern snakes and learned all about Yayoi Kusama, creating their own artist inspired pumpkins, printed fabric and lanterns.

The KS1 and 2 sketchbook Club have personalised their new sketchbook covers and begun to work with different mark making materials. They drew some images of things that are important to us, explored patterns, drew keys using different types of lines and then created worlds that the keys could open. The children from KS1 and 2 continue to develop confidence using line, pattern, shape and colour this term.

Year 6 completed their end of year photography project. They experimented with framing, editing, light, backgrounds, exposure, permission, focus and staging. They were amazing and took some very original, thoughtful and creative shots. They then took some fantastic photos of their friends and each other to make some great memories.

Year 6 have created sculptures. After exploring the art of sculpture and some sculpture artists, they designed and created their own. They used a variety of materials to suit their designs, problem solving as they worked through their projects. There was great manipulation and modelling of the materials, use of tools and careful thought to the decoration of their sculptures. We are so pleased with how the class developed their skills in this 3D area of art and how they supported each other, sharing techniques and ideas.

Year 4 explored sculpture this half term, comparing artists such as Giacometti and Henry Moore. They learned about materials used, what inspired the work and thought about the sculptures themselves. This led to some quick drawings of a variety of poses, gestural drawings and their own sculptures.

Following our recent Pupil Voice, some of our Art Ambassadors went on a walk throughout school and took photos of displays celebrating art, showing a range of skills and techniques throughout the different key stages. They were very impressed by the quality and range of examples around school. We are lucky to have such a rich learning environment celebrating the arts and other areas of the curriculum.

Children throughout KS2 have been busy creating a 2M wall hanging to go in one of our meeting rooms. The children drew templates of seaweed, fish, other underwater creatures (including a magnificent Kraken), cut out the fabric and embellished their designs with applique, stitching, sequins, beads and buttons. Some children painted and stitched into the background and others created the title lettering. We are lucky enough to have two wonderful grandparents in our school community that come in each week to work with and support different classes of children.

The children across KS2 have developed their sewing skills and many have continued to explore this area making their own toys, pencil cases, pictures, toy clothes and many other things. We are so proud of all of the work the KS2 children have done and a big thank you to our grandparent stitchers too!

Here is a celebration of art work going on throughout school this half term from designing and making rockets and impasto starry night mixed media paintings with masked moons and stars in Reception, Year 4 printing, Year 5 Bharti Kher and Gustav Klimt inspired watercolour line and pattern work and Year 6 sculpture work.

Year 3 have been learning about the life, work, influence and style of L. S. Lowry. They had created their own single point perspective drawings of buildings and coloured with chalk pastels. Then the children went outside to draw our new school extension but rain moved the lesson inside, iPad technology saved the day and they worked from photos they took instead!

Year 4 have been continuing with their figurative sculpture project. They have been comparing sculptors such as Henry Moore, Alberto Giacometti and Antony Gormley. They made tin foil athletes. They had lots of fun learning how to manipulate this tricky material... wire armatures next!

Year 2 have been perfecting their painting techniques with their Miro inspired artwork.

In Wire Craft Club the children have been making links using a jig, manipulating wire with pliers, making a sculpture, wire signatures and faces.

Year 5 have worked on their Frida Kahlo acetate designs. They each depicted images in sharpie pen that were important to them personally. The images ranged from pets, shapes, bands, toys, hobbies, games, food, shops and designers etc. They arranged these images on top of their traced Kahlo head and then painted carefully in acrylic on the reverse to keep the strong black outlines. These were mounted onto silver or gold papers to make the transparent acetate stand out. They enjoyed representing their own personalities in this way using acetate.

Year 6 have been researching the sculptural works of Silvia Marius, Henry Moore and Heidi Emmette. They have been working with a variety of materials and tools to create jewellery, mobiles and other 3D sculptures.

Year 1 have made some Huang Yuxing shapes for their new corridor display. They enjoyed exploring the different shapes and overlapping lines over pebble line drawings. They used oil pastels to build up the bright rainbow colour patterns and cut the shapes out to arrange the rainbow mountains and colourful pebble shapes.

Year 3 have been experimenting with graphite, and different types of charcoal and papers with their Stone Age Drawing. They each drew pictures to tell a story of their own.

Year 3 have been learning about the installation artist Slinkachu. They have worked on designing their sets and series of photos using their own ideas, inspired by his work. They made lots of props to complete their designs, planned their sequences and downloaded backgrounds etc. Children brought lots of items in to enhance their projects.

Year 6 have begun working on their Abstract art project. They have been experimenting with paint and painting tools to create artist research booklets about Jackson Pollock and Maria Vieira da Silva. The children used their annotation sheets to reflect on how the art work made them feel. They have all worked hard to produce very individual responses, exploring media and materials with creativity and independence.

The children in Year 2 worked on creating an ideas book of different parts of the face. They then explored creating scaled faces of their own and mixed colours and painted with a variety of brushes.

Year 5 children have explored colour mixing, pattern, shape and space in their collage and painted final piece following sketchbook exploration about Henri Matisse.

Year 1 have been looking at the work of artist Stephen Wiltshire, they were very proud of their own line drawings and mark making. The children continued this theme to explore colours and shapes with oil pastels.

Year 4 have been exploring the work of Derek Gores the Collage artist. They looked at his designs and discussed the features then created their own collages following their own interests of sport, fashion, vehicles etc.

Year 6 have been learning about the work of a variety of war artists and after producing sketchbook work inspired by John S Sargent and Henry Moore, they worked together directing and producing a tableau based on the 'Gassed' Painting by John S Sargent.
