Pupil Leadership

 At Grappenhall Heys, we encourage and celebrate young leaders as role models.

Children are appointed to these positions of responsibilities in different ways as we encourage them to recognise their own potential and that of their peers. For some positions, children prepare and deliver speeches to their peers and are voted for by the children in their class. In other cases, staff recognise a pupils' particular excellence in a subject and their ability to lead others.

Additionally, for some positions of leadership, pupils are interviewed by staff / other pupils for a role.

Each pupil leadership team can propose and take forward initiatives and projects on behalf of their peers, and be involved in strategic planning and processes such as the School Improvement Plan, governing body meetings and staff appointments.

The objective of effective pupil leadership teams is to help children and young people to:

  • enjoy and feel empowered by their education;
  • feel that their school responds to their needs and views;
  • have the opportunity to let adults know their feelings and opinions about things that affect them;
  • have a say about decisions, and to play an active role in making their school a better place;
  • develop active life skills through participation.

School Council

Having been voted for and elected by their peers, our school councillors work alongside Mr. Franklin and our teachers to give their voice and opinions about life at school. They were instrumental in developing our school library and choosing playground equipment. We very much welcome the thoughts of our pupils in how we can support them in their learning. The school council aim to meet at least once a month. Please view our School Council page

Curriculum Ambassadors

Our curriculum ambassadors are passionate and knowledgeable about their subjects. They support curriculum leads in designing the curriculum and ensuring enrichment opportunities for all. These pupil leaders assist in pupil voice sessions and subject learning walks. They meet with governors and champion their subject across all key stages and at all levels.

Play Leaders

Children's right to play is an important element of our school's values and ethos. Play leaders have been chosen for their excellent communication skills and teamwork. They model and support play between groups of children and teach their younger peers to interact with each other in a positive way. These children are responsible for acting as role models to promote sport and healthy living. They also promote active break times and lunches across the school. Play leaders have been trained in play leading and are supported by the staff to encourage others to join in

Prefects

Each term, a third of Year 6 pupils act as prefects and are role models in school. They help out at key events, support the office staff and teachers and lead by example acting as role models to others. They welcome parents and visitors into school and portray the manners and behaviour that we value in our children. All pupils in Year 6 have the opportunity to act as a prefect during the school year.

Librarians

We are incredibly lucky to have such a vibrant and well-stocked library at the centre of our school. Our librarians have volunteered for this role as they have a genuine love of reading and books and enjoy the reponsibiliity of promoting reading to their peers.

Our librarians share book recommendations with younger children and model how to treat our school library with respect.

From our school council, two children are chosen to act as Junior Safety Officers. Along with staff, It is their role to educate their peers on the importance of staying safe on the roads and on how to do that. They regularly feedback to children in assembly and meet with Mr Franklin to discuss their ideas.

Digital Leaders

Our digital leaders have been selected for their digital skills and their understanding of the importance of staying safe online. They act as role models to others and support other children with their learning and using digital technology at school and at home safely and respectfully.
