School Values and Ethos

Children, parents, staff and governors have been involved in discussing what we feel to be the ethos and values of our school. Our aim is to provide an outstanding education by working together in effective partnership with children, parents and the community. We ensure that children thrive in a caring, secure environment, which promotes personal excellence. Children are empowered to develop as life-long learners and become champions of their own success.

We encourage children to celebrate individuality: building helpful, respectful and responsible citizens. Together we create a loving community of purposeful learning that focuses on the whole child, body, mind and spirit.

We are Grappenhall Heys... and together we make a difference.

Our school values underpin our curriulum offer. Please see our PSHE map with links to social, moral, spiritual and cultural (SMSC) experiences to see how these values are at the heart of everything that we do. We believe very strongly in the involvement of pupils and parents in our school and value their voices and opinions. Click here for PUPIL VOICE and PARENT VOICE information.

British Values

At Grappenhall Heys Community Primary School we uphold, promote, teach and reinforce fundamental British Values:

- Democracy

- The Rule of law

- Individual liberty

- Mutual respect and Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

These values are embedded throughout all aspects of our broad and balanced curriculum. They are actively promoted through assemblies and daily collective acts of worship and are taught explicitly through Personal, Social, Health Economic (PSHE), Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural (SMSC) and Religious Education (RE) lessons.

Democracy

Democracy is an important value at our school. Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions. Pupils have the opportunity to air their thoughts and ideas through our School Council which meets on a regular basis and through regular questionnaires and surveys. The School Council are appointed through a pupil/peer voting system, reflecting our current British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they can do so in a safe and supportive environment. We educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering curriculum. Our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely through PSHE lessons and assemblies.

Rule of Law

The importance of laws and rules, whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout the school day. Our school's behaviour systems and the wealth of award and reward systems ensure that every child is able to learn in a safe and secure environment. Our pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws: that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

We encourage all our pupils to embrace differences and be respectful of others. We demonstrate the personal qualities of friendship and respect at all times. Respect for property and people are core values at Grappenhall Heys and underpin everything that takes place both inside and outside the classroom.
