Design Technology Celebration of Work

A popular activity in the Design Technology Club is tinkering with unwanted electronics, taking them apart, looking at the components and how they are constructed selecting and using a range of tools.

The children have been designing and making a variety of things from models, soft toys to pencil cases and folders, pen holders and jewellery.

They use a variety of materials and joining techniques including the use of folds, slots, braces, tabs and fasteners. They have become confident using junior hacksaws, cardboard canary saws, glue guns, punches, scorers and fabric scissors. The are adept at selecting the most suitable materials and equipment.

Our KS1&2 Tinker Club has been exploring various construction sets, making jewellery and loom bracelets, solving problems as they came across them. They have made simple and more complex electrical circuits with switches to control their circuits. The children have also been using tools to make wooden robots with cogs, eyelets, washers and screws.

Year 6 have also been designing and building their cam toys. They are building on DT skills from their Christmas frame structures last year. Lots of careful measuring and sawing of the wood for their toys.

This Summer term two teams of Year 6 children had the privilege of representing their school in a robotics pageant. After being given two new XRP robot kits, they have been working on their robot designs, using Tinkercad and coding their robots and have both made amazing progress, the judges were impressed with their knowledge of materials, their design sheets and coding/CAD work. One of our teams won the CAD category and their prize was a CAD workshop for school. We are so proud of our teams' achievements. Thank you to Warrington UTC and partners for organising the event and for the opportunities to remotely control larger scale Robots and learn about other real world technologies.

Year 2 children have designed their own buddy toys to help them with the transition to Year 3. After researching toys, they designed their own, created templates, cut out the fabric, stitched and stuffed their sewn toys. They created unique toys that will bring them comfort for years to come.

Year 4 explored lever mechanisms and have used a variety of techniques to make a working mechanism. They thought of a theme for their story book page and then got to work designing and making the background and lever system.

Key Stage 2 have begun working with Tinkercad to design a number of 3D projects as part of their design process.

We were busy completing our chair for a bear unit in Year 1, they explored different tapes and materials, the fanning technique and solved many problems during their designing and making.

On their residential, Year 3 made their money containers. They designed them first, each one vastly different. Developing template, sewing and joining skills from previous years, they used felt fabric, whip and running stitches, buttons and plastic press studs and the punching tool. It was great to see all the different personalities in their finished products. Also this term some of our Year 3 children joined others from Warrington schools at St. Monica’s for a DT workshop and made a bug hotel.

Year 5 have been designing and making their Upcycled T-shirts. They first looked at the problem of fast fashion, from landfill to environmental damage. The class thought of the materials and techniques they wanted to use to create their designs. At the making stage of their projects, there was lots of cutting, stitching, stencilling, painting, and glue gunning going on. Many with a Taylor Swift theme! The children have enjoyed seeing their ideas come to life and have supported each other too.

Year 2 children completed their own fire engine designs after researching them and drawing their designs in their project books. They used a variety of materials and tools, each designing features for their models that are essential for fire engines. They evaluated their designs on Seesaw, recording their responses verbally about their experiences and how they would do things differently to improve their model making next time.

As part of their work exploring their new Africa topic, the children in reception have been making kebabs with different fruits. They used cutting tools with care and tried new foods with their friends.

Year 1 classes made their Christmas slider toys. Year 5 art and design technology ambassadors helped to set up the activity and made modelled examples to support the learning of the children in Year 1. They are very proud of their leadership roles in school and love their chosen subject. They modelled scissors skills, manipulating card and decoration. Year 1 and 5 enjoyed their design and technology slider toys.

Year 6 have made their cam toys with wooden frames and cardboard panels. They researched ideas for existing toys and designed themes for their own. The children have become more proficient cutting and assembling their toys, using tools and selecting materials. They developed their designs with good finishing methods, careful thought of images, attention to detail, decoration and the movement of their cam mechanisms, trying different shaped cams to achieve the movement they wanted. Each toy was very different and the children enjoyed sharing ideas and techniques with each other.

Year 5 have just completed their Christmas market houses. They thought of the products they wanted to put into their house for the market. They designed, measured, cut and joined the wooden frame structure. The children selected and made the different aspects of their market house from signs, labels, jars of products, shelving, rooves, floors, panels, wreaths and a wide range of Christmas items. They are all very different and the children proudly took them home for Christmas.

Here is an example of the work some of our Year 5 children did using their Design Technology Project Books. It shows how they evaluate existing products, think about what they like, what aspects of the design they like and how they can develop innovative and unique designs of their own.

DT Club have been looking at inventions to improve our way of life and the world we live in. These range from automatic pet homes to robot weapon support for the armed forces.

Year 4 have completed their lever greeting card project. They looked at existing designs, explored a variety of lever mechanisms, designed and created card products with different themes ranging from Thank you cards to Happy Anniversary cards. they were really happy problem solving and thinking about material choices along the way and with their final products.

Year 2 have been designing and making their own soft toys to go up to Year 3 with them. They made some fabulous and original toy designs based on the idea from Maua Gang toys. First they researched soft toys, then they designed their own toy and learned how to make a template of their design. They labelled the colour of felt they needed. Their template pieces were cut out and the children sewed their toys with some kind adult helpers.

Year 6 designed and built their wobbler toys with motors, hand-made switches and off set hole wheel blocks. They experimented with lots of different materials and learned about electrical circuits, weight and balance and attaching materials.

Year 2 have been designing and making their own soft toys to go up to Year 3 with them. They had some kind adult helpers and made some fabulous and original toy designs based on the idea from Maua Gang toys.

The children have been designing and making toasted sandwiches, fruit fusions, croque monsieur, apple and sultana crumble and vegetable puff pastry tarts. They have used bridge hold, claw hold, grating, peeling, dicing, peeling and slicing techniques in their cooking preparation.

The children have been designing and making their own projects using tools and appropriate resources. They have become more confident with this and have enjoyed tinkering too.

D.T. Club takes place each week for KS2 children and they explore a number of activities from tinkering and taking apart broken electronics, baking, cooking, sewing, making electronic circuits, woodworking and many individual projects chosen by the children to complete with support. We are lucky to be well resourced with D.T. equipment, tools and materials and have become very good using problem solving, technical knowledge alongside innovative use of skills and resources to create some great projects with our friends.

Year 5 have researched existing frame structure bird houses and have looked at the work of a number of architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Sir David Adjaye and Zaha Hadid. they learned a lot about material qualities and making stable structures.

Year 2 have looked at the features and equipment stored on existing fire engines and have made their own engines solving many construction and material problems along the way!

The children designed their Christmas gift bags and made templates to use for their felt decorations. They chose the type of handles, size and shape of their bags. They stitched the felt pieces onto a background.
