Music Pupil Voice

We value the views of our pupils and hold termly informal chats with groups of pupils from Year 1-Year 6 to hear what they think about each subject. Each half term we see a different group of children so that we get opinions and ideas from throughout the school.

When speaking to children across Years 1–6, many shared how much they enjoy Music and the opportunities it gives them to be creative. Pupils spoke enthusiastically about learning to play different instruments and enjoyed listening to a wide range of music, helping them to develop their understanding of different styles and genres.

Children highlighted how much they enjoy singing and performing, as well as taking part in enrichment opportunities such as Rocksteady. They particularly value the chance to hear each other play, work together and build confidence through performance.

Pupils also described music lessons as fun and engaging, enjoying making music alongside their teachers and classmates. Many said they would like even more opportunities to take part, showing a real enthusiasm for the subject.

These views reflect the Music curriculum at Grappenhall Heys, where children develop skills in listening, performing, composing and appraising, while building confidence and a lifelong enjoyment of music.

In this pupil voice session, we discussed our school music offer including Charanga, in-school music lessons, opportunities to perform and what the children would like from their music curriculum. The children were overwhelmingly positive about music and loved the opportunities that they have to play an instrument and take part in concerts.

As part of our inaugural Spring Musical Performance, children were given the chance to perform to their peers and parents. Many children took part and we had singing, drama and lots of children performing solos or in a group. We had children playing the piano, cello, trumpet, violin and the ukulele.

Year 6 performed as a class and played the ukulele whilst singing to Try Everything. We asked the Year 6 chidren for their thoughts on the experience...

"I loved it!" Alex
"It was great to listen to other people play instruments." Joseph
"I felt proud of myself." Harley
"It gave people from a range of age groups a chance to showcase their talents." Eva-Rose
"It was nerve-wracking but in the end, it was fun because we got to play instruments in front of an audience." Anya
