Science Pupil Voice
Why is pupil voice so important?
We value the views of our children and hold half termly chats with pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 to hear what they think about each subject. During this time we see different groups of children so that we get opinions and ideas from throughout our school.
Pupil voice sessions 2024 - 2025
Spring term 2025
In our spring term pupil voice session we completed a science questionnaire to share our views. Across school pupils confirm their weekly lessons and enjoy science when they work in groups and discuss their learning. The 5 lines of enquiry is recognised and proves to be recalled by the children when they talk about working scientifically. Children talk about how they love science because their teacher is enthusiastic. Bright ideas time is being used in classes to recall prior learning and to engage children with new knowledge learning.
On 3rd February, our new Key Stage 2 Science Ambassadors took part in science training. This training is going to be used to engage all pupils with science during OPAL times as well as inspire and encourage children to be interested in science through assemblies and newsletters. This is an exciting new development in school, more information to follow.
Autumn term 2024
In our autumn term pupil voice we talked about knowledge and how our teachers help us to remember more.
Science we have been doing in autumn:
Year 1 - animals including humans - labelling our bodies and learning about mammals
Year 2 - Materials - 'We completed an experiment on waterproof materials.'
Year 3 - Rocks - all about different types of rocks and fossils
Year 4 - Sound - how we hear sound as vibrations, lots of hands on practical work
Year 5 - Conductors and insulators
Year 6 - Adaptations and genetics in evolution and inheritance
"Science is satisfying as you learn things about our world." Year 6 pupil.
"It is worth listening to because you learn things that can help you." Year 5 pupil.
"You do lots of hands on experiments, practical learning helps me to remember." Year 4 pupil.
"It is fun and we get to do things in lessons." Year 2 pupil.
Pupils agreed that teachers in school help them to remember key vocabulary using word lists in science books and on the working wall.
Bright Ideas Time - Helps children to recall prior knowledge as well as discuss and find out more facts and information about the lessons focus.
Pupils agreed that teachers help them to remember more through fun and active lessons, where they can join in the learning and test things out for themselves.
Pupil voice sessions 2023 - 2024
Summer 2024
Our science ambassadors met our school governors to talk about science learning in school.

Spring term 2. 2024 - Early Years

Our Science Ambassadors visited EYFS to carry out an explorative investigation with magnets and find out what they love about science learning.
“I like it when I can do it myself.”
“I like it when I find something out.”
“I like having a go.”
“It is amazing, look at the penny move with the magnet underneath. It is magic.”

Spring term 1. 2024

Key stage 2 pupils created mind maps of how we use the 5 lines of enquiry.

Key stage 1 pupils worked hard to create a wordle of all the science vocabulary they know.

Autumn term 2023
In our science pupil voice this half-term, we focused on prior learning and asked children about what they had learnt before.
"You can look at the science rod map in your science book" - Y5 pupil.
"I can use my road map to see what I have done before and what is coming next" - Y2 pupil.
"I can use books in my classroom and the library to help me with my learning and reading in science" - Y4 pupil.
"We all have knowledge organisers in our science books to help us remember important facts" - Y6 pupil.
"Teachers help us with our learning by giving us lessons in order, this helps us remember the learning" - Y4 pupil.
"I would like more science, maybe a science club" - Y2 pupil (backed up by many).
Pupil voice sessions 2022 - 2023
Summer term 2023
In our summer pupil voice meeting, we talked about:
- What does science involve,?
- How can we improve science?
- Which words best describe science, ?
- What have you most enjoyed learning about this year?
I really enjoyed doing the heart dissection of a lamb because we got to look inside of it. You could see the aorta and the blood and many other parts of the heart (Neel, Y6).
I have loved learning about space and what happens when we are just living our ordinary lives and so many things are happening out there (Toby, Y5).
I enjoyed plants and learning about your body, it is cool (Y2).
Which words best describe science?

In July 2023, science ambassadors from Year 4, 5, 6 met with our governors to provide them with an overview of science learning at our school.
Spring term 2023
What is science?
Biology - This is all about plants and animals
Chemistry - this is all about chemicals and blowing things up like mentos
Physics - This is about forces and magnets
Children, particularly in KS2 were able to talk about the three strands of science.
How often does your class have science?
All year groups talked about spending an afternoon a week on science. Expressing they would like more time for science.
What do you like and remember about science?
Y6 - Evolution, a timeline made from toilet paper
Y5 - Fake poo in Y4! the strength of an egg. I like the AfL quizzes.
Y4 - Soundwaves, using the data loggers and tuning forks.
Y3 - Rocks and soils, very interesting and we got to make and eat soil!
Y2 - Animals, learning about different life cycles
Y1 - I learnt about different body parts
When teachers do the experiments
When we have to write it up!
What would make science even better?
More experiments outside of class time so we can do them with our friends in other classes.
To use more technology in science
More doing science and less writing
What do you think you will do next in science and how do you know?
All children knew about the learning roadmap for science and a discussion around science learning was enjoyed.
Is there anything you would like to do more or less of in science?
More science in class
Experiments at playtime
More use of ipads
Number the roadmap so we know the order of topics covered
We took the time to share our books with each other to look at what each other are doing in our science lessons. We selected a piece of work that we are most proud of and described why we are proud of this work..

Autumn term 2022
How do you feel when you are about to start science?
Y6 - It is practical, so I enjoy it
Y5 - Excited for experiments
Y4 - Really looking forward to learning new things
Y3 - Learn about different things like scientists - positive
Y2 - Happy because I can do it
Y1 - Happy
What can you do and how do you feel if you get stuck?
Y6 - Use my knowledge organiser, this helps
Y5 - Use the working wall, there are ideas that help
Y4 - Ask a friend, speak to your teacher
Y3 - Our teacher is helpful
What do teachers do to help children to learn more and remember more in science?
Let us do experiments, this helps us with knowledge and understanding our work
Our teacher makes it funny
Teachers give us clues
Teachers help us with words and understanding what science words mean
We asked children what is science investigation?
Questions
Working out why and what things happen
Experiments - doing and trying to find something out and why it may happen
We asked children what do they enjoy about science?
Y6 - Experiments and practical learning
Y5 - Do different things, not always knowledge
Y4 - You can predict which helps you to then understanding and learn things by the end of the lesson
Y3 - Working together to work out an answer
Y2 - Find things out that you did not know
Y1 - Learn about different people in our world
Staff and pupils working together...
Staff and children worked collaboratively to create our school science vision. Working together in this manner supports our engagement with science learning and commitment to providing quality science provision. Our vision for science was created as part of our discussion in a pupil voice session.
Science Enhancements and Curriculum Impact
What our children love and remember about science...
A strength of our teaching and learning in science is the enrichment provided to support classroom based learning. We encourage off-site learning in our community to benefit the children's knowledge in the unit of work they are studying. During each pupil voice session children comment positively in their hands on experiences that we have provided in school and our local community.
See our Science Capital page.

What our children think about how we use technology...
Many children think positively about our new programme, Seesaw for recording their science work. Children are engaged in using metacognative strategies by teachers providing innovative methods to record their learning and evaluations of their understanding.
"Seesaw is really easy to record my learning because I can take a picture of my work, add labels and talk my answers." (Katelyn, Year 2)

What our children think about working walls and knowledge organisers...
"They help me do my work when in lessons because they have lots of information on about what we are learning." (Brodie, Year 6)
"Knowledge organisers help me to spell key words correctly." (Tillie, Year 5)
"I use the working wall to help me with my ideas." (Finlay, Year 2)

Responding to Pupil Voice
The 5 lines of enquiry...
Through one of our pupil voice sessions, our children requested more specific knowledge and understanding around their learning based on the 5 lines of enquiry. We listened to them and devised posters for our working walls to support children in which type of learning they are undertaking during each lesson to ensure children understand their type of enquiry.
